"Just wear your damn mask..." (jimal)

Last week, my wife's Passat TDI and a member of the local deer community attempted to occupy the same piece of real estate, resulting in the carnage pictured. While speaking to the claims adjuster, he mentioned to her off the cuff that in the past week he had three claims for deer strikes, and all three were Volkswagen turbodiesels.
Which reminded me of my first deer strike, back in 2005, when I was driving home from work one evening and another member of the deer community came running out into the path of my... 2003 Golf (wait for it) TDI.
Coincidence? Is there something to the sight/sound/smell of a Volkswagen TDI that rustles the jimmies of deer?
Conspire away.

No, the TDI drivers are like deer in headlights to deer...in headlights. It's a bad combination.

Perhaps the ticking of the injectors is the mating call of your local deers, so whenever a TDI comes into their area they seek it out, hoping to get some.

Perhaps the scent created by the multiple catalysts in the TDIs acts as a pheromone for the deer, this gets them aroused, and they go out looking to get some, again...

Where in CT? My dad already took one out this fall, and I saw one lurking by the road at least four times this weekend. There seem to be a lot this year, not just ones that hate VWs.

FACT: Diesel exhaust smells uncannily similar to deer pheromones.

I was wondering, does it affect your insurance or is it just seen as random and unavoidable?
As for the deer attraction, is it possible VW TDis are a bit quieter than most, giving the deer less warning? A Passat's definitely going to make less wind noise than a big SUV, and the engine's pretty quiet.

I had the same conjecture and posted it moments before you did. Nice job. I also have a theory about the noise from the injectors clicking might be the deers mating call.

The TDI is just so much greener than gasoline versions that the deer just want to come out and give you a great big hug for caring about the environment. And what do you and the other TDI drivers do in this situation?
You murder them.

There is a good reason for this. Ever seen deer whistles? Only sold in pairs. Why is this? Deer use high pitched whistles to advertise deer orgies, and the number of whistles alert them to potential openings. A vehicle with no whistle sources is deer orgy neutral. Odd number of whistle sources attract deer because there is room for one more. Even numbers tells them to not bother. For your own safety, convert your TDI to twin turbos.

Ah, they're over by New London. The deer are taking over apparently.

It is in reality a regional menace.

Seeing how we struck a deer last year in our Honda Pilot, NO, it doesn't. Insurance considers it an Act of God, which is out of your control. $250 deductable (for Allstate at least)

However, it WILL most likely show up as an accident on your Carfax. Our Pilot wasn't totaled, but we struck it pretty hard in the front (new bumper, headlight, AC condensor, winshield, etc
